Spokane man charged with illegally storing explosives, weapons in Bellevue

A Spokane man has been arrested after federal agents were alerted to a huge cache of explosives and other weapons the man had allegedly illegally stored in a Bellevue storage unit.

By Seattle Times staff and The Associated Press

SPOKANE A Spokane man has been arrested after federal agents were alerted to a huge cache of explosives and other weapons the man had allegedly illegally stored in a Bellevue storage unit.

Ronald L. Struve made a brief appearance in U.S. District Court in Spokane today and was ordered sent to the federal court in Seattle, where the case will be prosecuted. Struve said little in court and will remain in custody until his next court appearance.

He is being held on one count of storing high explosives in an illegal manner, and one count of possessing firearms not registered to him. The weapons came to light because Struve had fallen behind on his storage fees.

Federal officials were tight-lipped about a possible motivation for having the weapons.

Struve told an agent from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives that he did not plan to sell them, but rather that he "planned to use the items at some uncertain date in the future," the criminal complaint states.

Among the items ATF agents found were about 40 machine guns, along with grenades, silencers and other items. None of the weapons were registered to him, according to a search warrant affidavit.

Authorities served additional search warrants, according to Emily Langlie, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office, and the investigation is continuing.

I saw the pictures on the news this morning. Screw the guns, they found 6 bricks of C4 and grenades and other cool stuff.

At his Spokane apartment, feds say Struve had a number of anti-government materials, including a bumper sticker that read: "End the Fed."
Oh great, I can see where this is going. They'd just love to label supporters of sound money "terrorists".

On the news broadcast this morning, after talking about the machine guns and showing pictures of the grenades and C4, they started in on the anti-government stuff.

A good reason not to have "those types" of bumper stickers though.

Ooh, scary! Anti-government materials! That tells us he's a kook who should be institutionalized, or perhaps have his organs harvested for medical experiments.

Political correctness is an ancient and many-splendored thing. Smearing someone as anti-government, without saying why that's necessarily a bad thing to be, is one of the oldest slurs ever. Even in the time of William Laud and Star Chamber it was a worn-out smear.

Not only a huge cache, but it included semiautomatic weapons, and "semiautomatic" has six syllables. Also hollow-point -- here the audience gasps -- bullets, and a hoard of assault weapons.

On the to-do list for the day:

1) call local storage centers and ask about their next auctions of abandoned property due to failure to pay rent.

Ive heard rumors of people buying abandoned storage spaces wholesale and hitting it big, but I find it hard to believe. Why wouldnt the property owner take first dibs? I suppose you could get lucky and come across something that's not easily recognized as being valuable.

When push comes to shove, any bumper sticker is a bad idea. That will automatically get you put in the "reasonable suspicion" group.

Mntmn does that on the regular.........he even said that sometimes when he wins a bid the owner will show up afterwards and will pay over and above what he paid locking in a nice instant profit.

Quite lucrative if you have the expendable FRN's

Yeah, I have the "Don't steal: the government hates competition" one on my car. It'll probably get me put on some sort of list if I ever get pulled over. Fortunately my radar detector has proven pretty dependable warning me of impending threats.

I suppose logic isn't one of their issues as the FED isn't a government agency so how would "END THE FED" be a anti government bumper sticker.

As weird as it is, a lot of the chain storage groups throughout the US prefer not to look into locked units and to just sell them "as is". A friend who used to manage one said it is more or less because the owners are either too lazy to spend time looking through, or sort of fearful of what they might stumble upon.

I would be all game to go through a bunch of lockers...

Anyway if the jackass in the article was storing stuff like C4 like this than he gets what he deserves. If you are able to get your hands on this type of stuff why would you ever store it in a public location?

I never much cared for 'political' bumper stickers. Why expose yourself to the 'folks who do not think' out there.

Ditto that...

I guess he must have had no help at all, just figured out he would get it and store it for the SHTF.

You're right! Maybe the media should run a correction story saying he was an anti-private-banking-corporation nut! :applause_
